Democracy for America backs Cori Bush in Missouri’s 1st Congressional District

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Cori Bush in her primary fight for Missouri's 1st Congressional District against Democratic Congressman William Lacy Clay.

Democracy for America has more than 19,700 members in Missouri including 4,367 members in Missouri's 1st Congressional District.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization's decision to back Cori Bush in her race for Congress in the MO-1:

"More than ever before, the fight for racial and economic justice desperately needs leaders in Washington who intimately understand the profoundly personal struggles of Black, brown, and white working families and that's why Democracy for America members are excited to support Cori Bush in her race for Congress.

"Cori Bush's championship of Medicare for All, tuition-free college, and a $15 minimum wage isn't just an academic exercise. Cori's support for a bold progressive agenda is rooted in her own personal experience watching patients she cared for as a nurse struggle to pay for medicine they needed to survive, feeling the weight of crushing student debt, and surviving months of homelessness when times got particularly tough.

"Born and raised in St. Louis, Cori Bush is an organizer at heart who understands struggle, triumph, and the work we need to do together to fundamentally change a broken political system that empowers the wealthy and perpetuates an unjust justice system. Cori's the kind of bold, grassroots leader our country needs in Washington and we couldn't be more excited to have her back in this primary and hopefully fighting alongside her through November and beyond." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Cori Bush on receiving DFA's grassroots endorsement:

"Thank you for welcoming me into the DFA family. There is nothing like having a group like DFA as our biggest supporter." -- Cori Bush

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Bush -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Born an raised in St. Louis, MO, Cori Bush is working to get to Congress to bring the thoughts, concerns, and experiences of people like her into the halls of power. Bush knows, first hand, what its likes to spend months without a home, raise children while making just a breath over minimum wage, and bear the crushing burden of student loan debt. A registered nurse, an ordained pastor, and a grassroots act, Bush is committed to being a relentless champion in Congress for the big, bold inclusive populist reforms, like Medicare for All and robust criminal justice reform, that are necessary to respond to the needs of struggling Black, brown and white progressive working families.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.
