VICTORY: DFA applauds as Lauren Underwood (IL-14) is elected nation’s youngest Black Congresswoman

Lauren Underwood just won her race for Congress in Illinois' 14th Congressional District making her the country's youngest Black Congresswoman and the first Black member of Congress from the IL-14.

Democracy for America endorsed Underwood in her race for Congress in August. Following its endorsement, DFA recruited 197 volunteer leaders to Underwood's campaign that helped deliver more than 54,259 targeted grassroots voter calls using its DFA Dialer calling program.

DFA's Jim Dean on Lauren Underwood's historic win in Illinois's 14th Congressional District:

"Lauren Underwood's victory tonight isn't just an historic moment for Illinois's 14th District, it's a huge win for a Congress that desperately needs the voice of young women of color in a whole range of policy discussions.

"A nurse and healthcare policy expert, Lauren Underwood understands that healthcare is a human right. A champion for common-sense gun laws, comprehensive immigration reform, and robust action to address climate change, Democracy for America was honored to support Lauren in her race for Congress because we knew the voice she'd give to the New American Majority of Black, brown, and progressive white voters in Washington is critical to our country and the Democratic Party's future." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America
