Issues : Get Money Out of Politics

Government should be run by the people, not by the rich. Taking back our democracy requires changing the Constitution to make it clear that money is not speech and corporations are not people. We must also take away the power of the wealthy and their Republican allies to use gerrymandering to keep progressives out of office.

Senators Burr and Loeffler Must Resign!

Weeks before Americans across the country were homeschooling their kids, stocking up on medicine, and filing for unemployment, Republican Senators Richard Burr and Kelly Loeffler decided to use their inside information to sell off millions of dollars in stocks.

It’s outrageous. If you’re as angry as we are, take a moment to read below and add your name to our joint petition with Robert Reich calling for Burr and Loeffler’s immediate resignations.

Facebook: Don’t Air Trump’s False Ads

Facebook policy already "prohibits ads that include claims debunked by third-party fact checkers or, in certain circumstances, claims debunked by organizations with particular expertise" for all non-political campaign advertising on the platform.

CNN and NBC have rejected airing Trump campaign ads filled with lies.
Twitter has banned all political campaign ads from their platform.

Facebook must stop making money from fraud, lies, and purposefully spreading misinformation. Sign the petition right now!

Sign Rashida Tlaib’s petition: Restore the Voting Rights Act

In January, Democrats in the U.S. House will introduce a new bill to strengthen our democracy by expanding voting rights in a few key ways, including:

  • Restoring the Voting Rights Act, which was weakened by the Supreme Court in 2013;
  • Establishing automatic voter registration, making it easier for every single eligible American to vote;
  • Take away partisan state legislatures’ ability to gerrymander, and give redistricting power to independent commissions.

To pass this bill would be a MAJOR achievement in strengthening every American’s right to vote and ensuring fair elections. In my home state, we were successful in expanding voting rights through a ballot initiative this past month. But in state after state, voting rights are in desperate need of protecting.

It’s time that we give democratic power back to the people. Join Rashida Tlaib and Democracy for America in becoming a co-signer of the "Strengthen Democracy" bill today.

Sign Robert Reich’s petition: Let Medicare and Medicaid negotiate lower drug prices

Donald Trump's new drug plan omits the critical step needed to truly reduce prices: Taking on Big Pharma.

In 2003, Big Pharma got a U.S. law prohibiting the government from using its considerable bargaining clout under Medicare and Medicaid to negotiate lower drug prices.

During his campaign, Trump promised to reverse this law. But the plan he revealed Friday doesn’t touch it. Trump’s plan seeks only to make it easier for private health insurers to negotiate better deals for Medicare beneficiaries.

In reality, private health insurers don’t have anywhere near the clout of Medicare and Medicaid -- which was the whole point of Big Pharma’s getting Congress to ban such negotiations in the first place.

To truly reduce drug prices in America, we need to release Big Pharma’s stranglehold on the U.S. government.

Sign Robert Reich's petition with Democracy for America calling on Congress to allow Medicare and Medicaid to negotiate lower drug prices.

President Obama: End “pay to play” corruption

Thanks to the Supreme Court cases Citizens United and McCutcheon, major corporations can win federal contracts by secretly bribing politicians with millions in campaign contributions.

President Obama is considering putting an end to this by requiring that corporations that do business with the government reveal their campaign spending -- but first, he needs public support.

That's why Democracy for America is joining Public Citizen and a massive coalition of other organizations to deliver your petition signatures in events happening across the country on April 2 -- the anniversary of McCutcheon -- with a goal of reaching 500,000 signatures.

Tell the DSCC: Refuse to accept money from Wall Street banks

The big banks want Democrats to stop listening to Elizabeth Warren and start doing what Wall Street demands, no matter how damaging it is to the American people. As Reuters reported in an exclusive story:

"Representatives from Citigroup, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, have met to discuss ways to urge Democrats, including Warren and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, to soften their party's tone toward Wall Street, sources familiar with the discussions said this week...

Citigroup has decided to withhold donations for now to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) over concerns that Senate Democrats could give Warren and lawmakers who share her views more power, sources inside the bank told Reuters."

It's time we went on offense. The DSCC should not wait for Wall Street to decide its next move. Instead, the DSCC should tell Wall Street to get lost. The DSCC must stop chasing Wall Street money and start focusing on electing Democrats who will stand with Elizabeth Warren and other progressives. Will you stand with us?

Please join Robert Reich and sign DFA's petition to the DSCC: Refuse to accept donations from Wall Street banks like Citigroup, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America.

Congress: Pass the Government By The People Act

The Government By The People Act will match small-dollar donations with public funds, turning a $25 contribution into $175 -- or $100 into $700. This will incentivize candidates to pay attention to everyday voters, not big-money donors. It helps overturn the McCutcheon and Citizens United decisions and starts to get big money out of our politics.

The Government By The People Act is already endorsed by over 40 progressive, labor, and good government organizations -- including the Sierra Club and the NAACP. It’s time for Congress to recognize massive public outrage over the horrible McCutcheon decision and pass this bill.

Sign our petition and tell Congress to pass the Government By the People Act.
