Issues : Prevent Reckless Wars

Ever since George W. Bush launched the unnecessary and destructive invasion of Iraq, DFA has been opposed to reckless and foolhardy wars that weaken American national security and cause suffering to civilians in other countries. DFA will continue to push back against bad foreign policy decisions that make us less safe, and work instead for a progressive foreign policy that reflects our values at home and abroad

Require Congressional authorization before a nuclear first strike

Amazingly, there is no law preventing a U.S. president -- even one as unhinged as Donald Trump -- from pushing the button and starting a nuclear war whenever he pleases.

Rep. Ted Lieu and Sen. Ed Markey have a plan to stop that. They have proposed a bill that would require Congress to authorize a nuclear first strike. Their bill would stop Trump and protect all of us from nuclear destruction.

Sign the petition and tell Congress: Stop Donald Trump's nuclear threats. Pass the bill requiring Congressional authorization before any nuclear first strike.

Save the refugees: Tell Democrats to allow more Syrian families to come to the U.S.

Refugees are suffering and dying because governments in Europe, as well as our own, won't open their doors to take these families in.

It doesn't have to be this way. The United States government has said it will only take 8,000 Syrian refugees -- and so far, only 1,541 have arrived. That's not enough. We have to do better.

Democratic presidential candidate Martin O'Malley said we must do more. He's called on the US to accept at least 65,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016.

He's right. Add your name to our petition to all the Democratic presidential candidates -- ask them to match or exceed O'Malley's proposal to bring more Syrian refugees to America.

IRAN: DFA calls cloture failure “tremendous victory for diplomacy, proof US learned lesson of Iraq”

Democracy for America's reaction to today's defeat of the motion of disapproval on the Iran nuclear deal:

"Today's Senate vote to avoid an unnecessary, partisan effort to kill the Iran deal is a tremendous victory for diplomacy and proof that the United States has finally learned the lesson of the Iraq War.

"Still, while we celebrate this victory, we're under no illusion that the fight stops here. We know the war hawks and moneyed interests laboring to kill this deal and set us on the path to war aren't stopping with this vote, and they should know we aren't stopping either.

"Thanks to the bold votes of 42 Senate Democrats, peace and diplomacy were victorious today. In the days ahead, grassroots activists and organizations like DFA will continue working to ensure President Obama can begin enforcing this historic diplomatic achievement."  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Since the announcement of the Iran deal, DFA and a number of progressive allies have conducted numerous congressional calling efforts in support of the Iran deal and launched 60DaysToStopAWar.com to help facilitate progressive turnout at Congressional town hall meetings over the August recess. DFA statement on 41 Votes for Iran Deal

Statement from Democracy for America's Charles Chamberlain's on today's big victory for diplomacy and the Iran deal.

"War hawks spent millions this August trying to kill the Iran deal, but a nationwide army of grassroots activists showed up at town hall meetings, made hundreds of thousands of calls to their members of Congress, and held countless actions lifting up the voices of the majority of Americans who don't want another misguided war in the Middle East.

"Today, despite the millions still being spent against them, the grassroots champions of diplomacy won.

"While we won't rest until the final votes are cast and the resolution of disapproval is dead and buried, the landmark 41 Senate votes we're counting today is a tremendous victory for the American people and the belief that our country has finally learned the lessons of our disastrous march to war in Iraq." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America.

Defend the Iran deal and stop Republicans from starting a war with Iran

The United States, Iran and five other world powers announced a historic deal to dramatically curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for easing international sanctions on Iran.

Republicans are trying to sabotage the deal, put us back on the path to confrontation with Iran and start a war – but they can't do it unless Democrats help them.

We need to build an impenetrable firewall in Congress to prevent Republicans from passing any legislation to kill the deal and putting us back on the path to confrontation and war. Tell Democrats to go on record in support of the deal.

Sign the petition calling on Congress to support the deal and stop the Republicans from starting another war of choice in the Middle East.

President Obama: Don’t bomb Iraq

Once again, the headlines are full of awful stories coming out of Iraq -- and Republican hawks like Sen. Lindsey Graham are warning that we must bomb Iraq to avoid "the next 9/11."

Of course, these are the same people who recklessly led us into a decade-long quagmire in Iraq. This current catastrophe would not be unraveling if President George W. Bush had not chosen to invade this divided country in 2003 on trumped-up intelligence.

Right now, President Obama is considering the possibility of launching airstrikes, in addition to other options.

As Democracy for America has argued for years, this complex conflict cannot be fixed with the blunt object of more American military involvement. No bomb can create peace between these opposing sects -- only the Iraqi people themselves can do that.
