Baldwin Victory

Burlington, VT Today, Tammy Baldwin defeated Republican candidate Tommy Thompson to become Wisconsins next Democratic Senator and the nation's first openly gay Senator.

Democracy for America (DFA), endorsed Baldwin in August as a member of their Dean Dozen because she will help form a strong progressive coalition in the Senate. DFA members across the nation contributed more than $67,700 to Baldwin's campaign. In Wisconsin DFA members made more than 26,100 calls and volunteered countless hours to help defeat the influx of corporate cash that flooded into the state.

"Fortunately for Tammy and Democrats across the country, the ground game proved too strong for Republican super PACs like Crossroads GPS and Americans for Prosperity." Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America said, "Not only have voters soundly rejected Tommy Thompson's vision of Wisconsin and the Tea Party ideals he values, but voters also rejected that concept that America's best days are behind us."

"By electing a strong Democratic Senate, Baldwin will join forces with progressive leaders like Sen. Sherrod Brown, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and newly-elected Sen. Warren to focus on this nations progressive priorities protecting Social Security and Medicare from Paul Ryan's plan to create a voucher system, investing in our communities to create jobs, and giving women autonomy over their bodies." Dean continued, "What a tremendous victory for Tammy Baldwin and all Democrats in Wisconsin tonight. In a state that has seen more than half a dozen elections since 2010, no one can claim that Wisconsinites sat this election out. Thanks to a tremendous grassroots effort by DFA members and volunteers across the country, Wisconsin is sending a true progressive hero to Washington. Congratulations to Tammy, her entire campaign staff, and all of Wisconsin that turned out this election."
