On May 16, 2011, Paul Krugman (Nobel winner for economics) wrote in the New York Times, I know that serious people are supposed to be shocked, shocked at the Democrats calling the Ryan plan a plan to dismantle Medicare but thats just what it is. If you replace a system that actually pays seniors medical bills with an entirely different system, one that gives seniors vouchers that wont be enough to buy adequate insurance, youve ended Medicare. Calling the new program Medicare doesnt change that fact.http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/16/whats-in-a-name-4/ On May 26, 2011, Paul Krugman added in the New York Times, And, by the way, the claim that the plan would keep Medicare as we know it intact for Americans currently 55 or older is highly dubious.http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/27/opinion/27krugman.html?_r=2 On May 19, 2011, national TalkingPointsMemo reporter Brian Beutler, reported, House Republicans, facing tough questions in their districts for voting to phase out Medicare and replace it with a subsidized private insurance system, are fond of pointing out that the plan they support wouldn't touch benefits for existing beneficiaries, or for people who will reach eligibility within 10 years. There are a number of problems with that plan, but top Democrats are finally pointing out the biggest one: it's simply not true.http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/05/dems-to-gop-stop-lying-to-seniors-that-republican-budget-wont-impact-current-medicare-beneficiaries.php On May 19, 2011, Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius described Medicare cuts that would take affect immediately under the Paul Ryan plan, Seniors now qualify for screenings -- cancer screenings, mammograms, a variety of preventive care without copays out of pocket. That would disappear. A lot of new anti-fraud rules going after people who would steal out of the Medicare trust fund. All of that would go away this year. She added that closing the donut hole a measure that saves seniors thousands in drug costs would go away under the Ryan plan.http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/05/dems-to-gop-stop-lying-to-seniors-that-republican-budget-wont-impact-current-medicare-beneficiaries.php My father worked with Charlie and respected him.
