Citizens United - SCOTUS
Democracy for America: The Copper Kings Return to
Montana
With a 5-4 decision the Supreme Court
allows campaigns to be bought and sold to the highest bidder
Burlington, VT Today, Democracy for America (DFA), released
the following statement after the Supreme Court on a 5-4 decision, reaffirmed
the Citizens United decision by
reversing the Montana campaign finance law.
Yet again, the Supreme Court opens up our political system to be
bought and sold by the highest bidder, said
Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. In true form, the Court
overturns a hundred year old campaign finance law enabling the copper kings to
own Montana as they did years ago. In Montana
and throughout the rest of the country, big businesses and special interest
will now trump the voters.
Make no mistake; this is an on-going effort by big business to take
over our democracy. Here at DFA, well
do whatever it takes to prevent big business and those who are ethically
challenged from stealing democracy from the voters and taxpayers. Attorney General Bullock deserves tremendous
thanks for standing up to corporate power and demanding more for our country,
continued Jim Dean.
Democracy for America has taken steps
to chip awayCitizens
United, first by
collecting over 200,000 signatures supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders
Constitutional Amendment and now turning their efforts to the court.
During the campaign, DFA collected 105,640 member signatures and made over
1,200 member phone calls urging their Attorneys General to support Attorney
General Bullocks fight. DFA will continue to focus their members
passion on restricting big businesses from buying the democratic process.
