DFA endorses Chokwe Antar Lumumba for Mayor of Jackson, MS

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Chokwe Antar Lumumba to be the next Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. Lumumba is the fourth mayoral endorsement of the year for the organization, which has 4,341 members in Mississippi and is committed to investing $500,000 in progressive municipal candidates this cycle.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the endorsement of Lumumba:

“Chokwe Antar Lumumba wants to put Jackson’s government back in the hands of its residents, instead of giving away the city's assets to corporate interests. His commitment to racial justice and municipal accountability is a model for the kind of leadership we need to see from more candidates up and down the ballot. ”- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

The Jackson mayoral primary is on May 2. Lumumba, a founding member of the Mississippi Human Rights Collective, has been active in the campaign to remove the confederate insignia from the state flag. He is running his campaign on a platform of keeping the cities’ resources, such as the airport and water management, under local control.

Democracy for America is a people-powered political action committee with 1 million members nationwide. In the past it has helped elect progressive leaders to municipal leadership across the country, including Mayor Michael Tubbs of Stockton (CA), Vice Mayor Regina Romero of Tucson, Illinois’ Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, and City Councillor Helen Gym of Philadelphia.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.
