Democracy for America endorses Chuy Garcia in Illinois race for U.S. Congress
Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in his race for U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 4th congressional district.
DFA was a proud supporter of Garcia in his race to become Chicago’s Mayor in 2015 and worked alongside him in support of Bernie Sanders’ campaign for President in 2016. The member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC has 18,411 members in the City of Chicago (and more than one million members nationwide) and works closely with four affiliated grassroots groups in and around the city.
Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s decision to back Garcia in the IL-4 Race:
“Throughout his life, Chuy Garcia has fearlessly taken on Chicago’s bullies and bosses and fought for working families -- and that’s precisely why Democracy for America is so excited to support him in his race for Congress.
“In the era of Trump, it’s not enough to have progressive leaders in Congress who know how to vote the right way; we need leaders, like Chuy Garcia, who know how to take on powerful interests and build the people-powered, grassroots movements needed to deliver change.
“In Congress, Chuy will be a critical asset in the fight for an inclusive populism that creates jobs and raises wages, works to deliver healthcare to all, and seeks to end voter suppression. We simply can’t wait to help get him there." -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America
Jesus “Chuy” Garcia on receiving the support of DFA’s one million members nationwide:
“I’m honored to receive this endorsement from Democracy for America. DFA has been leading the fight to build a progressive movement and I will do everything I can to make our government work for the people instead of wealthy special interests.” -- Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, Cook County Commissioner & candidate for Congress (IL-04)
Jesus “Chuy” Garcia is an immigrant and a community organizer who currently serves as Commissioner for the 7th District on the Cook County Board. While Garcia had previously served his community in Chicago as a Committeeman, Alderman, and State Senator, his 2015 campaign to become Chicago’s Mayor against Rahm Emanuel inspired progressives across the country by forcing the first ever run-off election in the city’s history. In Congress, Garcia is committed to being a crystal clear voice for immigrants and a champion for inclusive populist priorities like Medicare for All and a $15 minimum wage.
Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 919 progressive candidates nationwide.
