Democracy for America endorses in five key DC City Council races

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement in Washington, DC’s races for City Council Chair and four City Council seats.  DFA’s endorsed candidates are:

  • Ed Lazere, Council Chair
  • Jeremiah Lowery, At-Large City Council
  • Elissa Silverman, At- Large City Council
  • Brianne Nadeau, Ward 1 City Council
  • Charles Allen, Ward 6 City Council

DFA is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with just under 10,000  members in the District of Columbia, more than one million members nationwide, and a close relationship with DC for Democracy, a DC-based DFA-affiliated local grassroots progressive group.

In 2014, DFA proudly supported Councilmembers Nadeau and Allen in their successful fights to join the District’s chief policy-making body.  This is the first time the national progressive group has endorsed in a race for DC Council Chair.

DFA’s Electoral Director (and DC voter) Annie Weinberg on the decision to get involved in these five critical DC City Council races:

“Washington, DC isn’t just our nation’s capital, it’s a national leader in the fight for key inclusive populist policy reforms like paid family leave and ground-zero for the resistance to Donald Trump’s hate-fueled agenda, which is why it’s so important that it has a city council committed to a populist progressive agenda.

“As Council Chair, Ed Lazere would be devoted to making sure that DC’s growing economy doesn’t come with the cost of growing inequality and the city council stays focused on critical issues like housing affordability, strengthened worker protections, and giving every child access to a quality education.

“Long-time DC for Democracy member, Jeremiah Lowery will bring the ingenuity of a grassroots progressive organizer to the Council and be the kind of strong advocate for DC statehood that the District’s nearly 700,000 tax-paying, underrepresented residents deserve.

“Councilmembers Elissa Silverman, Brianne Nadeau, and Charles Allen have all been tremendous progressive leaders on the council whose focus on creating a more affordable and equitable city for both long-time and new District residents will be critical in the fights ahead.

“Washington, DC deserves a city council that’s united in its commitment to combat the city’s growing inequity and aggressively push the fight for DC Statehood and voting rights forward.  With Ed Lazere as it’s chair, Jeremiah Lowery as it’s new At-Large member, and Elissa Silverman, Brianne Nadeau, and Charles Allen all re-elected to their seats our nation’s capital will have the inclusive populist leaders on its city council it needs to deliver on the District’s deeply rooted progressive values." -- Annie Weinberg, Electoral Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.
