Democracy for America endorses Kerri Evelyn Harris in Delaware U.S. Senate primary

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Kerri Evelyn Harris in Delaware's Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Harris is running in the primary against sitting U.S. Senator Tom Carper.

Democracy for America has 3,672 members in Delaware and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the grassroots progressive organization's decision to stand with Kerri Evelyn Harris in her race for U.S. Senate:

"With this fall's election less than 90 days away, it's more important than ever to seize every chance we have to push the Democratic Party to better reflect the diverse communities it serves and put forward the kind of bold, inclusive populist agenda we need to confront our challenges and inspire millions of new & infrequent voters to join our fight.

"A veteran, gay woman of color, and community organizer, Kerri Evelyn Harris has the kind of voice, life experience, and progressive vision our country desperately need in the U.S. Senate right now.

"In 2018, Democrats have an opportunity to make it clear to voters, millions of whom stay home in election after election, our commitment to confronting corporate power, standing up to the right's unrelenting hate, and fighting for bold inclusive populism -- like Medicare for All and robust criminal justice reform.

"Unbought by corporations and unbroken by a political establishment focused on doing their bidding, Kerri Evelyn Harris personally understands the struggles of Delaware's working families and, with a lifetime of experience serving her country and community, she'll be their unbridled champion in the U.S. Senate.

"Democracy for America is honored to endorse Kerri Evelyn Harris for U.S. Senate, not only because she'll be the kind of fearless progressive leader we need in Washington, but also because the visionary, inspiring, and people-centered campaign she's running is precisely the kind of grassroots effort Democrats need to win nationwide." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Kerri Evelyn Harris on receiving DFA's grassroots endorsement:

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of Democracy for America (DFA). This organization is focused on renewing our nation's democracy to ensure that all Americans are represented and our national structure becomes inclusive and balanced. Their vision aligns with mine and I look forward to working together to build a greater America where ALL of our communities can thrive!" -- Kerri Evelyn Harris

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Kerri Evelyn Harris -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Kerri Evelyn Harris is a veteran, an LGBTQ woman of color, an advocate, and a community organizer who has dedicated her life to public service. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Harris held multiple jobs to make ends meet before landing in her current position as Program Director for Achievement Matters, where she leads a team working with youth to close the educational achievement gap. Harris is also active in numerous Delaware-based community action groups, from the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League and the Center for Popular Democracy to serving as the Kent County Coordinator for Network Delaware. When she's elected this November, Harris will not only be the first LGBTQ person of color in the U.S. Senate, she'll be an outspoken champion for a broad-based, inclusive populist agenda including Medicare for All, universal pre-K, a $15 minimum wage, and opposition to any efforts to expand fracking and offshore drilling.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.
