Democracy for America endorses Nikema Willams for Congress in GA-5

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Nikema Williams in the open race for Georgia’s 5th Congressional district, to fill the seat of civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis.

Georgia State Senator Nikema Wiliams has spent her career fighting for voting rights, fair representation, and to empower marginalized communities. Williams was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2017 and became the first Black woman to serve as chair of the Georgia Democrats, first on an interim basis in 2013 and permanently in 2019.

After formally announcing her candidacy on the 55th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act, Williams has made it clear that she’s committed to carrying on the late John Lewis’ leadership on voting rights and other major progressive priorities in Congress.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Williams:

“No one will ever fill the shoes of American hero and civil rights icon John Lewis, but it’s hard to imagine someone better equipped to do justice to his trailblazing legacy and serve the people of Georgia’s 5th Congressional District than Georgia State Senator Nikema Williams. Democracy for America is excited to endorse Nikema Williams for Congress because we know she’ll continue to lead the fight for voting rights while picking up the banner for other important progressive issues like the Green New Deal and Medicare for all.

“A relentless advocate for reproductive justice, free and fair elections, and an economy that works for working families and not just billionaires, Nikema is a trusted and tested leader in her community who knows how to get the job done and win tough fights.

“Democracy for America is honored to stand Nikema Williams in her race for Georgia’s 5th Congressional district, and we look forward to fighting alongside her through November and beyond.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Nikema Williams on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"Now more than ever, we need bold leadership fighting for American families no matter the zip-code. I will be a champion for Medicare for All and Universal Family Care while fighting systemic racism and voter suppression. I'm proud to be endorsed by Democracy for America as we continue to fight for the promise of America." -- Nikema Williams

DFA has 4,959 members in Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, 30,458 in the state of Georgia, and more than one million members nationwide.
