Democracy for America endorses Tim Canova in Florida’s 23rd congressional district primary

This morning, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Tim Canova in his Democratic primary challenge of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in  Florida’s 23rd Congressional District.

DFA  is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 73,136 members in Florida and one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism.

Statement from DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots organization’s endorsement in Canova’s Democratic primary race:

“DFA members are backing Tim Canova in this race for Congress, not for who he supports or who supports him, but because he has spent his life challenging the power of Wall Street banks, multinational corporations, and the systemic political corruption that keeps them profitable at the expense of everyone else.

“From her vote in support of fast track authority for the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership to her unabashed protection of a payday lending industry that makes billions off the back struggling working families, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has aligned herself with the wealthy interests who are making income inequality worse in our country.

“Simply put: If Democrats are going to be the party that confronts the wealthy and powerful who dominate our political process and enable growing income inequality, we need political revolutionaries like Tim Canova in the U.S. Congress.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America.

Statement from Tim Canova on receiving Democracy for America’s endorsement:

"I am honored to have the endorsement of Democracy for America, an organization that is always standing for responsive and progressive leadership in Congress. DFA members in our district are overwhelming in support of our campaign. They understand that Debbie Wasserman Schultz has failed us by standing with Republicans and corporate interests against the people of South Florida. This district deserves a nominee who will stand with working Americans, not wealthy elites. I'm glad to have them on board as we continue to build a grassroots campaign that believes in progress for all."  -- Tim Canova

DFA’s endorsement of Canova brings with it a one-million member-strong grassroots army that has knocked hundreds of thousands of doors, made over 11.1 million phone calls, and raised and contributed more than $36.6 million to help elect 843 progressive candidates nationwide since 2004.

Canova was also recently endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, who DFA is strongly supporting in the 2016 Democratic race for President.
