DFA Celebrates Rashida Tlaib’s Big Reelection Win

Rep. Rashida Tlaib has triumphed in her reelection campaign for MI-13, in a district so consistently blue it hasn’t had a Republican representative since the 1940’s.

Tlaib was one of DFA’s very first endorsements of the 2020 cycle

and received DFA’s support in her first race for Congress in 2018

DFA Chair Charles Chamberlain on Rep. Tlaib’s victory in Michigan:

“Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s victory last night is a progressive win on more than one level.

“Even though Tlaib’s seat was considered to be safe after her primary, her team devoted themselves to continue organizing their community with the ambitious goal of increasing voter turnout by the 21%, a turn-out increase that could have kept Michigan blue had a similar program been run her district alone in 2016 would have kept Michigan blue.

“Democracy for America was honored to work with Tlaib on this effort, just as we have been honored to work with her many times since she’s been in public office. The xenophobia, islamophobia, and straight-up racism that Rep. Tlaib has taken on from many, including Donald Trump, has never deterred her from serving her constituents and creating a better country for all Americans.

“In less than two years in Congress, Tlaib not only became a national leader in the fight for key progressive priorities like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal, she also got a Republican president she vowed to impeach to sign a bill she championed protecting pension benefits, successfully passed an amendment to fund the replacement of lead water pipes, and set-up four in-district service centers to directly aid her constituents.

“Rep. Tlaib is a bold and unapologetic leader who will continue to shape progressive politics for years to come, and DFA can’t wait to continue fighting alongside her.” -- Charles Chamberlain, CEO, Democracy for America
