DFA endorses Jaime Harrison for U.S. Senate in South Carolina

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Jaime Harrison for U.S. Senate in his race against three-term incumbent Sen. Lindsay Graham.

Harrison is DFA’s first 2020 endorsement for U.S. Senate and kicks off the progressive group’s “Flip the Senate” strategy, an effort to end Republican control of a body that could halt inclusive populist reform even with a Democrat in the White House.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots group’s endorsement of Harrison:

“Jaime Harrison brings the energy and agenda South Carolina needs to fire up and mobilize the record-breaking number of new voters and community leaders Democrats need to end Lindsay Graham’s spineless and corrupt career in Washington.

“From Doug Jones breakthrough win in 2017 to Stacey Abrams near upset in Georgia in 2018, it’s clear that the South is on the cusp of a generational political transformation. With a deep connection to grassroots voters in South Carolina, Jamie Harrison has the personal story and life experience needed to build the kind of people-powered campaign we’ve seen defy the odds by following the leadership of the New American Majority of Black, brown, and progressive white voters.

“Progressive trailblazers like Jaime Harrison are exactly who we need to replace pathetic career politicians like Lindsay Graham, whose blind allegiance to Donald Trump has made it clear that his own personal and political ambitions matter far more to him than the needs of South Carolina families.

“We’re excited to support Jamie Harrison early in this race, and we look forward to fighting alongside him all the way to the U.S. Senate.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from U.S. Senate candidate Jaime Harrison on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

“I was born to a teenage mom and learned to read from comic books - I understand the challenges working folks face because I’ve lived them. Democracy for America understands too many people are being held back by a system that rewards wealth and punishes work. I look forward to working together to beat Lindsey Graham and shift our focus to tackling skyrocketing health care costs, stopping rural hospitals from closing, and ensuring everyone who works hard gets their shot at the American Dream." -- Jaime Harrison

DFA has 11,558 members in South Carolina and more than one million members nationwide.
