DFA: Judiciary vote on Coney Barrett a “brazen display of anti-democratic political power”

Minutes ago, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, in a party-line vote, voted to advance Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States to the full Senate.

Democracy for America's CEO Yvette Simpson on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote:

“The party-line vote that just took place in the Senate Judiciary Committee was one of the most brazen displays of anti-democratic political power we’ve ever seen in the U.S. Senate.

“The Judiciary Committee's move to push Judge Amy Coney Barrett forward 12 days before a presidential election, makes it clear that Senate Republicans are willing to destroy any institution, norm, or historic commitment to ensure their anti-choice, anti-worker, and anti-democracy agenda is free from voter input.

“The full Senate still has a chance to come to its senses, halt this absurd process, and make it clear which President they want choosing the next Supreme Court Justice. However, after six years of watching Mitch McConnell’s relentless “block-and-pack” effort to fill the federal courts with right-wing ideologues, we know how unlikely it is that his Senate lackeys will discover their conscience before the final vote takes place.

“Let’s be very clear: A final vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a direct threat to the future legitimacy of the U.S. Supreme Court, and the first step down the road to a series of reforms necessary to restore structural democracy and ensure our courts don’t continue to be pulled out of step with the American people. Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s illegitimate installation on the Supreme Court will have consequences for Senate Republicans on election day and beyond, we guarantee it.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America
