DFA: Senate Democrats Need to Do Everything Possible to Stop Gorsuch

Democracy for America (DFA) Executive Director Charles Chamberlain issued the following statement after reports that Senate Democrats may be confused about how strongly to oppose Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee:

“Senate Democrats need to get it together and make their unequivocal opposition to Gorsuch clear. Honestly, it’s somewhat incredible that there are some Democrats in the U.S. Senate who don’t seem to understand the stakes of a Gorsuch vote. A vote for Gorsuch is a vote for overturning Roe v. Wade, a vote for more unchecked corporate power, and a vote against the millions of Americans who are tired of being screwed over by the rich and powerful.

“When Democrats dither and bend over backwards to appear ‘reasonable’ in the ways only Washington can define it, they allow Republicans to enact their extremist right-wing agenda. Democrats need to do everything possible to stop Trump’s extreme pick for the court, up to and including filibustering him.”

“If Gorsuch is confirmed, the American people, who are in-the-streets, on-the-phones, and at-town-halls against Donald Trump’s hate-fueled agenda, won’t accept procedural cop-outs and sorry excuses from their supposed allies in the U.S. Senate. Senate Democrats need to make it clear that they will be unified in steadfast opposition to Judge Gorsuch. Anything short of that is a betrayal of the people who are fighting Trump’s agenda, and puts these Senators at risk of not getting re-elected. There is no time to waste.” - Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America
