DFA Statement on Montana Special Election

Democracy for America Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on Democrat Rob Quist’s narrow loss over billionaire Greg Gianforte:

“Once again, Republicans were willing to pull out all the stops to eke out a narrow win for another billionaire candidate, pouring millions more than Democrats into a race in a district that Donald Trump won by more than 20 points. Rob Quist’s campaign outperformed the last Democratic candidate by double-digit margins and proved that the way to forward is not to hem and haw, but to run a populist campaign on progressive values.

“That’s the lesson the Democratic party needs to take to heart - that in the current political environment, with more people energized to kick Republicans out of office than ever before, seats like this are winnable -- but only if we get in early, organize and fight to win. We cannot afford for the party to wait until after the November 2018 elections to adopt a strategy that will flip control of the House.” - Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America, which has 6,716 members in Montana, endorsed Quist on March 29. Volunteers across the country have been making use of DFA’s call tool to make over 860,000 phone calls to Montana voters, and DFA members have contributed more than $36,900 to Quist’s successful campaign.

Democracy for America is a people-powered political action committee with 1 million members nationwide. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.
