DFA: “We aren’t celebrating tonight’s impeachment votes”, but “honoring the work” that got us here

Moments ago, the U.S. House of Representatives began voting on Article of Impeachment against Donald Trump.

Democracy for America Chair Charles Chamberlain released the following statement as the formal vote on impeachment commenced:

“As an organization, Democracy for America has been calling for Donald Trump’s impeachment since June 2017, but we aren’t celebrating tonight’s impeachment votes in the U.S. House. Instead, tonight, we want to honor the millions of Americans, ordinary committed citizens who love their country, who have spent the last three years fighting to get us to this moment.

“In 2017, we took to the streets to shine a light on what Donald Trump’s campaign had done to get into office and the crimes they started committing the moment they go there.

“In 2018, we made calls, knocked doors, and contributed everything we could to elect a Congress that would finally hold the Trump administration accountable for its lawlessness.

“Over the last year, we’ve worked, sometimes with quiet pressure behind the scenes and sometimes front and center during townhall meetings & rallies, to make sure that our Representatives ensured that no one, including the President of the United States, is above the law.

“Thanks to the diligent work of millions, tonight’s votes ensure that Donald Trump will be forever branded as the country’s third impeached president.

“More importantly, after tonight’s votes, history won’t be able to deny that, when faced with the most blatantly dishonest, manifestly corrupt, grossly incompetent, and sickeningly cruel U.S. president ever, Americans and their elected leaders in the U.S. House stood up, fought back, and did everything in our power they could to protect and defend the Constitution and the rule of law.

“We have no illusions about the difficult road ahead next year, both for a fair trial in the U.S. Senate and a fair election free from foreign government influence, but we’re not afraid. The dedicated Americans and the grassroots strength it took to get us to tonight’s impeachment votes aren’t going anywhere, and that gives us hope.” -- Charles Chamberlain, Chair, Democracy for America
