IL-03: DFA celebrates Marie Newman’s primary victory over corporate Dem incumbent

This evening, Marie Newman beat anti-choice Democrat Dan Lipinski in the closely watched Democratic primary in Illinois 3rd Congressional District.

Democracy for America endorsed Newman in tonight’s race in April 2019, making her the grassroots group’s first non-incumbent endorsement of the 2020 cycle. DFA also supported Newman in her tight race against Lipinski in 2018.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Marie Newman’s primary victory in the IL-03 Democratic Primary:

“Marie Newman’s primary win tonight is a tremendous victory for progressives and everyone who believes the Democratic party should be unequivocal in its support for abortion rights, LGBTQ equality, and the fight for economic justice.

“For years, anti-choice corporate Democrats like Dan Lipinski have given Republicans cover as they’ve sought to roll back a woman’s right to choose, tried to deny the human rights of the LGBTQ community, and attacked the idea of a $15 minimum wage. With Marie Newman’s victory over Dan Lipinski tonight the fiction that there is bipartisan support for Republican’s backward agenda is over.

“Democracy for America was proud to stand with Marie Newman in 2018, we were honored to stand with her early in this 2020 race, and we can’t wait to fight alongside her for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and robust criminal justice reform through November and beyond.” -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America
