Jim’s statement on super committee - Patti Murray

Burlington, VT - Statement from Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America on Super Committee negotiations: If John Boehner and Mitch McConnell wanted to get serious about cutting the deficit they would let the rich pay their fair share like they did under the Clinton Administration when we had a surplus. But, instead they are proposing that we cut Social Security. Social Security by law cannot contribute to the deficit. It has a $2.7 trillion surplus in 2011 that is projected to grow to $3.7 trillion in 2022. Serious? Republicans never let facts get in the way of their so-called serious proposals to protect the richest 1%. The shame is the Democrats who are considering going along with it. If Democrats like Patty Murray want to get serious, they would stand up for seniors and the middle class and tell Boehner and McConnell to seriously shove it.
