June 19 Primaries: DFA closely watching DC Council races

While celebrating Juneteenth with millions across the country today, Democracy for America (DFA) will also be closely watching the returns this evening in a number of key Democratic primaries taking place for the DC Council in Washington, D.C.

DFA-endorsed candidates running in Tuesday's Democratic primary in Washington, D.C. include:

  • Ed Lazere (DC Council Chair)
  • Jeremiah Lowery (DC Council, At-Large)
  • Elissa Silverman (DC Council, At-Large)
  • Brianne Nadeau (DC Council, Ward 1)
  • Charles Allen (DC Council, Ward 6)

A long-time supporter of DC Statehood, DFA was particularly excited to work this year alongside its DC-based affiliated group, DC for Democracy, in support of Ed Lazere and Jeremiah Lowery's bold progressive challenges of sitting incumbents for Council Chair and one of the At-Large seats, respectively.

DFA also proudly supported three Council incumbents -- Brianne Nadeau, Charles Allen, and Elissa Silverman -- who have proven themselves to be real leaders in the fight for inclusive populist policies that have helped build on DC's history of progressive leadership. In 2014, DFA proudly supported Nadeau and Allen in their successful fights to join the Council.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like those we're following in today's primary elections -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since 2004, DFA members have raised and spent more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.
