Massachusetts Chooses Warren over Brown

Released: Nov 6, 2012 9:50 PM

Burlington, VT – Today, Elizabeth Warren defeated Republican incumbent Sen. Scott Brown to become Massachusetts’s next Democratic senator retaking the U.S. Senate seat that once belonged to Sen. Ted Kennedy.  Democracy for America (DFA) is proud to have endorsed Senator-elect Warren as a member of the Dean Dozen, the highest tier of endorsements from the organization.  With it, Warren received countless volunteer hours and more than $600,000 in support from DFA members.

Warren will join progressive Sen. Sherrod Brown in Washington next January.  DFA members across Massachusetts actively sought to support Warren and oust Scott Brown by volunteering with the Warren campaign.   DFA hosted 6 Action Summits, each a four-hour long training focused on important campaign skills for volunteers, before turning these super-volunteers over to the campaign.

"I started volunteering in the spring for the Warren campaign and after spending a few hours each week working to elect Elizabeth, I began to see just how much was at stake in this election and how much we needed Elizabeth in the Senate," said DFA member Nancy Pitkin from Lowell Massachusetts. "So I gave more time and volunteered countless hours to make sure she won tonight. This victory came down to her compassion and commitment for the middle class and standing up to big businesses that were misinforming the public to increase their profits. She has made that commitment to us and will carry it to Washington."

DFA invests in progressive candidates around the country to build a stronger and more progressive Democratic party.  By organizing and electing a stronger, more progressive Democratic Senate, voters placed significant value on this election's democratic priorities -- protecting Social Security and Medicare, investing in our communities to create jobs, and allowing women to make decisions regarding their reproductive health.

“Elizabeth Warren is a true progressive hero and with her victory tonight, Massachusetts is sending a problem solver to lead in the Senate,” said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. “Throughout her career, Warren has been a champion of the under-dog and a fighter for fair economic values and principles. As she joins forces with progressive leaders like Sen. Sherrod Brown and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I have high hopes for the future of our country.”
