MD votes for Marriage Equality

Burlington, VT Today, voters in Maryland voted to allow gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry. The vote ends a statewide battle that spanned two legislative sessions.

Democracy for America (DFA), a national progressive ally in the fight for marriage equality released the following statement upon learning of Question 6's successful passage:     "Maryland finally lives up to its moniker as the Free State", said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America. "With this vote, Maryland joins Maine, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia on the right side of history by extending marriage to all loving and committed gay and lesbian couples."

Hasan continued, "Marriage equality is the future of our country earlier this year we witnessed a sitting President endorse marriage equality and the Democratic Party enshrine marriage equality in its national platform. While discrimination and fear still lurk under the surface for those who disagree with marriage equality, with today's vote in Maryland we see a different picture. We see an America that strengthens family values by extending marriage equality to all couples who desire a lifelong commitment to one another. Maryland moves us further along that course tonight."
