VICTORY: DFA celebrates Ayanna Pressley’s historic U.S. House win in Massachusetts’ 7th

Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) just won her race for Congress in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District to become the first Black woman to represent the state in the U.S. House.

Democracy for America supported Pressley in her primary challenge of nine-term incumbent Democrat Mike Capuano in what was one of the biggest Democratic primary upsets of the 2018 cycle.

DFA on Pressley's history-making general election victory:

"When Democracy for America decided to back Ayanna Pressley in her successful primary challenge of a nearly 20-year Democratic incumbent, we did so because of her bold track record of transformative leadership in the City Council and because we believed that it was positively critical that Democrats seize every opportunity we have to elevate and empower the next generation of progressive women of color.

With her victory tonight, Ayanna Pressley has not only made history as the first Black woman ever elected to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives, she's ensured that Democrats have the voice of a young, Black progressive woman helping lead the fight for inclusive populist reforms like Medicare for All, criminal justice reform, and a $15 minimum wage.

We were honored to stand with Ayanna Pressley throughout her people-powered race for Congress, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside her as she shows what the leadership of the New American Majority of Black, brown, and progressive white Americans is capable of in the months and years ahead. -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America
