VICTORY: DFA celebrates Lauren Underwoods win in IL-14

Rep. Lauren Underwood successfully beat back her right-wing challenger in Illinois’ 14th Congressional district after entering the 2020 cycle as one of the GOP’s top targets.

Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Rep. Underwood's reelection campaign in June 2019, after supporting her in her historic 2018 race where she defeated an incumbent Republican to become the youngest Black woman ever elected to Congress.

DFA Chair Charles Chamberlain on Rep. Lauren Underwood’s reelection win in Illinois:

“Rep. Lauren Underwood won reelection tonight because voters in Illinois 14th Congressional know that now, more than ever, we need elected leaders who put science ahead of politics.

A registered nurse and the youngest Black woman ever elected to Congress, Rep. Underwood was putting public health front and center in Washington long before the COVID-19 crisis. In just her first term, she’s brought every part of her life experience with her to Washington and been a driving force in national discussions on critical public health issues like health outcome disparities in marginalized communities and the stunningly high maternal mortality rates for Black women.

“Even as the right poured hundreds of thousands in dark money into defeating her, Rep. Underwood never stopped fighting for her constituents. Rep. Underwood earned the support of voters in Illinois’ 14th Congressional district and Democracy for American couldn’t be more excited to continue working with her as she continues to champion expanded access to healthcare, robust action on climate change, and reproductive rights in the years ahead.” -- Charles Chamberlain, CEO, Democracy for America
