VICTORY: DFA celebrates Mondaire Jones’ potentially “history-making” primary victory in NY-17

Mondaire Jones just won a wide-open Democratic primary in New York’s 17th Congressional District, setting him on the path to becoming the first Black openly gay man in Congress.

Democracy for America was an early Jones supporter, backing his run for Congress in December 2019.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Mondaire Jones’s primary victory in New York’s 17th Congressional District:

“Tonight’s primary victory not only sets Mondaire Jones on the path to becoming the first Black, openly gay member of Congress, it also sets him up to be one of the U.S. House’s newest champions for progressive priorities like the Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and robust criminal justice reform.

“Through the coronavirus crisis and recent week’s nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice, it’s been more clear than ever that Congress needs members who understand, first hand, the struggles that young people, working families, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people face every single day in our country.

“DFA endorsed Mondaire Jones early in this race because we knew he’d bring the life experience, perspective, and instincts of a progressive fighter that our country so desperately needs with him to Washington. We were honored to stand alongside him this primary, we look forward to helping deliver a history-making victory with him in November, and we can’t wait to fight for our shared progressive values right next to him over many years ahead.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America
