VICTORY: DFA cheers as Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) makes history as one of the first Muslim women in U.S

Rashida Tlaib just formally won the race for Congress in Michigan's 13th Congressional District to become the first Palestinian-American and one of the first Muslim women in Congress.

Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Tlaib in May 2018 during an extremely competitive multi-way Democratic primary, offering on-the-ground staff support, including digital strategy and voter targeting planning. Later, Democracy for America members named her the winner of the 2018 Grassroots All-Stars competition, where members vote for the most exciting races to watch nationwide, resulting in a commitment by DFA to raise $20,000 for her campaign.

DFA's Jim Dean on Rashida Tlaib's election to Congress in Michigan's 13th:

"While Rashida Tlaib is breaking an important glass ceiling tonight as the first Palestinian American and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, Democracy for America members are also excited to see her heading to Congress tonight because we know the kind of unrelenting champion for bold, inclusive populist ideas she's going to be in the U.S. House.

"Rashida Tlaib isn't going to Congress to support Medicare for All, criminal justice reform, or a $15 minimum wage, she's going to Congress to fight for those ideas and work hand-and-hand with the grassroots to get it done. We were honored to stand with Rashida early in her campaign and we look forward to fighting alongside her for racial and economic justice for years to come." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America
