VICTORY: DFA cheers Veronica Escobar (TX-16) becoming Texas’ first Latina Member of Congress

This evening, Veronica Escobar won her race in Texas' 16th Congressional district, becoming the first Latina member of Congress elected in Texas

Democracy for America endorsed Escobar for Congress ahead of her primary in September 2017.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Veronica Escobar's historic election in Texas' 16th Congressional District:

"Throughout her career, Veronica Escobar has long fought for racial and economic justice in El Paso's border community and now, as Texas' first Latina member of Congress, she'll have the opportunity to take that fight to Washington.

"Democracy for America endorsed Veronica Escobar early in her race for Congress because we knew she understood, first-hand, the dangerous crossroads the country faces and was committed to ensuring that every community that calls Texas home -- Latinos, African-Americans, Asians, and LGBTQ Americans -- has a leader standing up for them.

"A passionate advocate for Medicare for All, humane immigration reform, and policies that protect and expand Social Security, Veronica Escobar will be a fierce champion for multiracial inclusive populism in Congress. We couldn't be more honored to have stood with her in this race and we look forward to fight alongside her in the months and years to come." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America
