VICTORY: DFA says “no one should be surprised” by Lucy McBath’s win in Georgia’s 6th

This afternoon, Lucy McBath declared victory in her race for Congress in Georgia's 6th Congressional District. McBath's win over Rep. Karen Handel comes less than two years after Handle beat Democrat Jon Ossoff in a 2017 Special Election that remains the most expensive congressional race in U.S. history.

Inspired by the surge of grassroots momentum behind her campaign, Lucy McBath was Democracy for America's final endorsement of the 2018 election.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on Lucy McBath's declaration of victory in Georgia's 6th:

"No one should be surprised by Lucy McBath's stunning victory in Georgia's 6th Congressional District even though she was outspent nearly 8-to-1 in the closing weeks of this race or because she was running against a right-wing candidate who, just in June 2017, won the most expensive congressional race in U.S. History.

"From the very start of her race Lucy McBath wasn't running as just another candidate for Congress, she was running as a 'Mother of the Movement,' and a relentless champion for racial, social, and economic justice.

"Democracy for America was honored to stand with Lucy McBath in this election, not only because the movements behind Lucy and Stacey Abrams were mutually empowering, but because we knew Lucy would bring to Congress the passion and vision Democrats need to take on a gun manufacturing industry that profits from death and a fringe right administration that thinks a poverty-level minimum wage is acceptable.

"Lucy McBath wasn't the kind of candidates DC insiders thought Democrats needed to win Georgia's 6th District, and we couldn't have been more excited to stand with her in proving them wrong." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America
