VICTORY: Jamaal Bowman’s win NY-16 “one of the biggest upsets in recent progressive history”

In a major upset, Jamaal Bowman just won the Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District over 16-term corporate Democrat Rep. Eliot Engel.

Democracy for America endorsed Bowman’s bid for Congress in April.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Jamaal Bowman’s upset primary victory in New York’s 16th Congressional District:

"Jamaal Bowman delivered one of the biggest upsets in recent progressive history in a victory that underscores that the future of the Democratic Party lies with leaders who are ready to fight for bold progressive reforms and help bring the life experiences of a new, more diverse generation of Americans to the halls of power.

“Jamaal Bowman and the grassroots army that powered his victory didn’t just defeat a 16-term incumbent beloved by the corporate Democratic establishment, they did it in the middle of a deadly pandemic when many of the traditional tactics grassroots progressives deploy, like door-to-door canvassing, were nearly impossible.

“Bowman’s success despite the odds and treacherous landscape is a testament to what’s possible when you have a candidate who knows his community, grassroots supporters who won’t let anything stand in the way of victory, and a bold progressive vision for the future of the country that’s time has come.

“Change has come to New York’s 16th District. All of us here at Democracy for America have been honored to stand with Jamaal Bowman as he fought to get us to this moment, and we look forward to fighting alongside him through November and beyond as he works to deliver on his promising future as a progressive leader in Congress.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America
