WI Press Call Release for Canvass Launch

After an Overwhelming Response from DFA Members in WI and Around the Country to Stand up Against the War on Working Families, DFA Launches Efforts on the Air, Over the Phones, and On the Ground

Listen to the recording of the live press call from Monday July 11 with Nick Passante and Jimmy Haggerty. (MP3) Madison, WI - When Democracy for America members in WI started protesting outside the State House to stop Gov. Scott Walkers war on working families, DFA members from around the country rushed to support their efforts. This has resulted in an unprecedented campaign to recall 6 Republicans in Wisconsin.

As a college student in Wisconsin, I could not stand idly by while working families like mine are being attacked in order to protect tax cuts for wealthy corporations, explained, Jimmy Haggerty, DFA Canvasser. Thats why I joined the DFA to canvass to recall Republican Sheila Harsdorf.

Jimmy is a student at the University of Wisconsin -Eau Clare. He joins more than 60 local DFA canvassers to work in three must win districts to recall Sheila Harsdorf (SD 10), Alberta Darling (SD 08), and Dan Kapanke (SD 32).

DFA launched three canvass operations this week in key must-win districts to add the third level to our layered communication strategy to be on the ground, on the phones, and on the air, said Nick Passanante, DFAs Field Director for Wisconsin. To win in Wisconsin, we will knock on hundreds of thousands of doors, get on the phones, and get the message out over the airwaves that no one can take away a working Wisconsites rights to a fair days pay for a fair days work.

DFA has pledged to spend $500,000 on canvass and grassroots organizing operations and $500,000 on ads. As part of that plan, we'll contact 100,000 voters over the phone and knock on 50,000 doors for an initial contact and at least 50,000 more doors just for the get-out-the-vote operation in the final ten days. Since DFA has 25,000 members in Wisconsin, they will be a large part of the volunteer operations across the state.

Democracy for America is proud to be a part of the leadership team of one of the best coordinated campaigns within the progressive movement, We are Wisconsin. We are Wisconsin is a group of labor organizations, womens groups, grassroots groups, netroots groups and others who are all working in concert to stop the Republican war on working families. DFA is also in a close partnership with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) on all of the television ads and the two groups have jointly raised over $1 million already to run two ads in the state.

Since the campaign began, DFA members have: - Raised $1,531,614 jointly with the PCCC online to keep ads on the air and put boots on the ground in WI - Watch the two ads: WaronWorkingFamilies.com and http://www.RecalltheRepublicans.com - Made more than 90,000 phone calls to voters in the state during the supreme court race - Helped recruit 2,600 volunteers to collect recall petitions - Knocked on more than 8,000 doors in District 10 and 32 Made more than 11,000 phone calls in District 8 and 32

This is the largest state based campaign DFA has run in its history.
