Howard Dean announces launch of Democracy for America

On March 18, 2004, exactly one month after concluding his bid for president, Howard Dean announced the launch of Democracy for America, outlining his vision for its work in a Seattle speech. As the first presidential campaign to turn into a national political action committee, Dean told supporters this people-powered group would aim to accomplish four main goals: promote grassroots democracy and bring new people into politics; support candidates and officeholders who tell the truth and stand up for what they believe; fight against special interests; and fight for progressive policies like health care for all, investment in children, equal rights under the law, fiscal responsibility, and a national security policy that makes America stronger.
